What is Orthodontics? It is the branch of dentistry that deals with teeth, jaws, facial disorders and treatment.
When should be the first Orthodontic Examination?
The first orthodontic examination can be performed at 6-7 years of age when the first permanent teeth of the children begin to appear. At this age, treatment is initiated in very specific cases, but when the milk teeth fall and when the permanent teeth will come out the timing of the treatment that may be required later, this can be determined after the first examination.
What can be done to our 6-7-year-old child?
We have two goals at this age,The first goal of dentistry in terms of dentistry in the time of the fall of the permanent teeth in the timely emergence (guiding guidance) is the 2nd goal is to ensure that the children in general health nose breathing. Children who mouth breathing at night (mouth open sleep, snoring) will be discussed with otolaryngologists, adenoids, tonsillitis, nasal curvature (septal deviation), allergic rhinitis, sinusitis should be rescued from problems. Because mouth breathing, jaw-face development is adversely affected.
Can 6-7 Years start the treatment ?
Except for special conditions such as shortness of the maxilla, this treatment is not preferred. Only simple applications, such as a placeholder or transpalatal arch for preventive purposes, can be used to prevent future disorders.
What is the Best Age for Treatment?
If there is no skeletal disorder and only a dental correction is to be made, 12-13 years old is the ideal age for wire application, where all permanent teeth come out of the mouth and mature. If you have a skeletal defects, according to the state of the disorder, such as growth and development can be initiated after the 6-7 years (girls 18-19, men after age 20), the treatment can be planned.
Treatment can be applied to adult patients?
The treatment can be applied at any age, there is no age limit. The only requirement of treatment is that the teeth and surrounding tissues (gums, bones) are healthy.
What are the rules to be followed in the treatment of wire?
- If there are problems related to the health of the teeth before starting the treatment (filler, canal treatment, gum treatment, etc.) they need to be considered
- In the presence of the wires applied during the treatment, cleaning must be done at least 4 times a day and each brushing lasts for 3 minutes as the cleaning is more difficult than normal.
- In order not to break the inserted wires and thus to prevent the treatment from disrupting, the patients should follow the food and drink rules that the doctors will place.
- It should be kept in mind that reinforcement treatment should not be disturbed and is part of the treatment.
What is Reinforcement Therapy?
After active treatment with fixed wires, the treatment is applied to the new positions of the teeth by using fixed and mobile appliances to ensure the gum and bone to be reorganized. Ideally, consolidation therapy should be applied as much as the duration of active treatment. However, in practice, 6 months of day and night (only by eating out) and 6 months with night-time reinforcements are practiced. Fixed reinforcement should be kept in the mouth as long as it remains in the mouth and if it breaks in fixed appliances, the broken apparatus should not be removed from our clinic until 24 hours by appointment. After the fixed apparatus breaks are repaired, the use of the movable apparatus can return to its normal routine.
What are the problems if treatment is not done?
Most patients are referred to orthodontics because of tooth wisdom. In addition to aesthetic problems, tooth and jaw disorder can cause loss of chewing and speech functions. In addition, it is difficult to provide clean teeth in the teeth of rotten and gum disease is likely to occur. If there is a closure problem due to tooth and jaw defect, there may be jaw joint disorders in the long term. In case of jaw and tooth size mismatch, some teeth may be buried. Embedded teeth can cause root dissolution, cyst formation and pathological problems in neighboring teeth. Psychologically speaking, the patients with peritoneal teeth, corrupted jaw relations are known to be withdrawn, and they are hesitant in human relations.
How long does orthodontic treatment last?
The duration of treatment varies from patient to patient. The reason for this is that the factors such as the amount of dichotomy, the type of closure disorder, and the age of the patient affect this duration. The treatment lasts between 6-24 months on average. During this period, patients are called for an average monthly check-up. However, these times are valid for normal conditions. The patient’s interest in treatment and care can decrease and increase treatment time.
Treatment Causes Pain?
There is no pain in the orthodontic clinic When wires are applied to your teeth, it is normal to have a maximum sensitivity of 2 days. Your cheek, tongue and lips get used to your wires for a maximum period of 1 week. In short, the presence of wires in your mouth will be forgotten 1 week after the wires are attached.
Are Teeth Treated Corrected?
Even in individuals who have never received orthodontic treatment, there is a normal tooth movement that is going on for a lifetime. Treatment may be affected by this natural process. With the application of the reinforcement treatment sufficiently, it is possible to increase the permanence of the correction obtained as a result of the treatment.
Wires Teeth Correct?
If the teeth are brushed correctly and frequently during the treatment, there is no possibility of caries occurring. If the teeth are not brushed well, decay may occur even if the wires are not.
Are the wires invisible?
Along with the developing technology, there have been great developments in orthodontic materials. In addition to the metal wires, the less noticeable tooth color (transparent) wires or the lingual wires bonded to the invisible back surface of the teeth may also be used.
Is It An Expensive Treatment?
Prices for orthodontic treatment vary according to the severity of the case. When it is considered that there is a long treatment that requires 10-30 control, it is understood that there is no expensive approach at all. In addition, access to treatment has been made easier with long-term payment options.
